Jain food habits

Every religion and culture has its own inhibitions and practices that might make it unique. One of such religion is Jainism, which is based on the motto "Ahimsa Parmo Dharma" that strictly prohibits any kind of violence. As per Jainism, the vegetables that grow beneath the ground are strictly prohibited. This prohibition, it is claimed also helps the followers  in maintaining health. It's not just onion and garlic that is not consumed, in fact other root vegetables like potato, carrot, brinjal, turnip and even radish are some of the vegetables that are avoided. The eating habits of Jains might not be generic, however, they certainly are healthy for a human being.

Reasons why you may want to follow their eating habits:

1.'Non-violence is supreme religion'

Those who practice this religion, believe in non-violence or Ahimsa and they believe any act of violence will attract bad karma to them. As per their religion, the underground vegetables comprise living organisms, which are inevitable to naked eye. Eating these vegetables may mean harming the living creatures or conducting a form of violence.

2. The Ayurveda logic

As per Ayurveda, there should be a balance between the kind of foods you are eating and this is defined by rajas, tamas and sattvik food. In this case, root vegetables such as onion and garlic come in the category of tamasik foods that have negative energy attached to them, which may hinder the spiritual practices.

3. Food for survival

Jains believe in eating food that is inevitable for survival. This practice makes them healthier than any other person.

4. No eating after sunset

You would find it hard to believe, however, followers of the sect do not eat anything after sunset and consume their dinner before it. This is because they feel eating food after sunset means committing violence against tiny organisms, which may enter their food in the absence of light and also they give the scientific reason that your body takes 3-4 hours to digest or process the food. That's why they have early dinner.

5. Avoid leftover food

Some followers avoid having food that are stored overnight. This is because the stored food might contain microorganisms such as bacteria and yeast, which are prohibited in Jainism.

6. Honey is prohibited

In Jainism, ahimsa or non-violence is the motto, and thus consuming honey is also forbidden. Honey is extracted from honeybees and in this case, is termed as a form of violence.

7. Nothing against turmeric and ginger

These two ingredients are always talked about with doubt when it comes to the community, however, these can be consumed. The reason: they are dried and Jains consider those ingredients that can be dried up.

8.Giving up desires

The sect believes in bringing out kindness in a person, and giving up on their desire. It is believed eating sattvic food helps you conquer your emotions and as well as desires.
